The race this year will be contested by over twenty horses, who are likely to be headed in the betting by Old Fashioned and Fresian Fire. The 2008 Kentucky Derby was won by the outstanding Big Brown, who went on to take the second leg of the triple crown, when winning the Preakness Stakes, however he was unable to complete the Triple Crown after running with an injury in the Belmont Stakes. The Triple Crown has only been won in fact by 11 horses in history and none since Affimed achieved the feat in 1978.

The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the US Triple Crown. It is followed by the Preakness Stakes just two weeks later with the final leg being the Belmont Stakes in June. Any horse that wins all three of thee races in any one season will be written into the history books, in 2008 Big Brown managed to win the first two races before finishing last in the Belmont Stakes. There has been no winner of the Triple Crown since 1978 when Affirmed wrote his name into the record books.
